Scenic Bird Food pioneered the use of extrusion technology in 1984 to manufacture foods for exotic cage birds. Having developed this technology for bird food, we produce a light and crunchy morsel unlike any other pellet. Our morsels do not sink in water nor do they absorb moisture so fast that they fall apart. Many birds like to dunk or float their food before eating it and this is a feature that only Scenic offers its customers.

Extruded foods are like pellets but with significant differences. They are light and crunchy, not hard, and usually are manufactured in a variety of sizes and shapes.

You may add fresh fruits and vegetables to Scenic Bird Food when you offer it to your bird. A significant advantage to feeding Scenic is that you can mix it with the fruits and vegetables or feed it alone. You do not need to add vitamins or mineral supplements to our foods.

If Scenic is fed in a separate cup and kept dry it can be left in the cage for twenty-four (24) hours. If it is fed wet or mixed with fruits and vegetables it should be removed before bedtime.

The storage of our food is simple and easy. Store the food in a cool and dry location like a pantry shelf. After opening the bag, transfer the contents into a plastic storage container that has a good airtight lid. Do not use metal storage containers to store the food.

On this page you can find the description of our food products and a list of the typical birds that eat each food. If you are not sure which diet may work best for your birds, please feel free to contact us.

Hot and Healthy Cockatiel Food
This round "ball" is a 3 mm sphere, about the size of a "BB".
This food is for smaller hookbills and enjoyed by Cockatiels, Love Birds and Parakeets. It is often added to warm water to make a "stew" because of the spicy flavor. It "soaks-up" easily and makes a wonderful flavor and texture.

Tropical Bits
This "micro" size multi flavored and colored product is about the size of a pinhead. It is our smallest product. It is fed to Finches, Canaries and other soft billed birds. It is also fed to larger birds when mixed with their fruits and vegetables. It is easy to use this product to convert birds to our morsels by "hiding it" in their favorite foods. This is especially useful for converting birds that have been eating seeds for a long time.

Tropical Bits also "soaks-up" water or fruit juices and makes excellent fruit and vegetable "stews" for stubborn birds who won't eat pellets or extrusions. It can even be heated in "Soak and Cook" type pasta and bean mixtures.

Dry Lory Food
Lory Food is available in two forms: a small round morsel and a powder.

Both foods are a nutritionally complete diet and contain all vitamins and minerals as well as a higher caloric density than other foods. Our Lory Foods have thoroughly been tested on lories, lorikeets and hanging parrots. These birds can vary in weight from 30 grams (one ounce) to 275 grams (about 10 ounces).

Historically, these birds have been offered liquid nectar solutions (LNS) as their diet. LNS are not appropriate, economical or safe for these birds. (See White Paper.)

Lory Food is easy to prepare and feed. Feeding directions are available on this web site.

Scenic Handweaning Food
Now available for almost all species we offer both a small and a medium size for parrots and a separate formula for Macaws (See High Energy Handweaning Food).

Invented and announced by Press Release in 1993 to caregivers worldwide, this food was been widely advertised and wildly accepted by bird lovers everywhere. We received complements from the Association of Avian Veterinarians for its innovation and relevance. Many claimed it even reduced the incidence of aspiration in young birds and allowed relatively inexperienced bird owners a chance to finish weaning their new pets. Many use it to re-socialize their pets as they reach maturity milestones.

Scenic Handweaning Food is specifically formulated and manufactured to absorb 5 times it weight in water so that it can be fed to young chicks still on the syringe. This teaches early eating skills and decreases dependence. It also helps socialize young birds to a life in captivity with their human caregivers. Many stores use this product to introduce the new bird owner to their new bird regardless of the bird's age thus developing a bond of trust and care that lasts a lifetime.

Just as important, our Weaning Foods can be fed to birds of all ages and become a part of their diet for the remainder of their life. It is easy, safe, and fun to feed to the birds because of the closeness it develops between them and you. It is now a "must have" food in most homes.

High Energy Handweaning Food
Now available in both a Macaw (Jumbo) and a Jungle (Amazon) size. The Macaw size makes the hand weaning process simpler for the largest birds because the food is a full ½ inch in diameter. The Jungle size makes the hand weaning process simpler for larger parrots because the food is the same size as our Jungle Food.

Scenic Handfeeding Food
This Handfeeding Food is a powder used to raise newborn chicks. This food is developed and manufactured to meet the stringent digestibility and sterility requirements of baby birds.

Many ask us why our handfeeding formula is slow to mix. It is because it contains proper levels of fiber to develop the young digestive systems and fragile organs that are just beginning to function in birds under twenty-one (21) days of age.
